Welcome!

Here you will learn the basics of composing functions.

 The Compostion of Functions

Suppose that f and g are two functions, the composition f of g is defined by

f g(x) = f(g(x)).

It may also be represented like this: (f o g)(x)

Real Life Application

Here is an example of how the composition of functions becomes a useful concept in real life.

(Problem derived from purplemath )

Before trying this real like application problem, we recommend trying the [practice problems] first.

You make a purchase at a local hardware store, but what you've bought is too big to take home in your car.

For a small fee, you arrange to have the hardware store deliver your purchase for you. You pay for your purchase, plus the sales taxes, plus the fee. The taxes are 7.5% and the fee is $20.

(i)  Write a function t(x) for the total, after taxes, on the purchase amount x. Write another function f(x) for the total, including the delivery fee, on the purchase amount x.

(ii)  Calculate and interpret f (t(x)) and t(f(x)). Which results in a lower cost to you?

We hope that this page has somewhat increased your knowledge of functions and the different things that you can do with them. Hopefully, the composition of functions is a bit more clear than it was before. If not,

I would suggest putting this information on separate pages. It just sort of runs on and on. The pages then appear in the sidebar and make it easier to navigate around.

I would suggest losing the music...If you go to the "walk through" on Jing, the music plays over the talking....
